OK. Before I go ahead with this one, I would like to say that this is a list of my favorite shopping malls in KL; as in according to me. If you think other wise, feel free to leave a comment below or drop me a message anytime. I will publish a list of favorites ‘as voted by readers’ in time to come.
1. Mid Valley Mega Mall
Mid Valley mainly caters for the middle class consumer with hundreds of retail outlets and, eateries. If you are looking for something more high-end, there is always Gardens Mall, which is located just next to Mid Valley Mega Mall. The Gardens is home to a string of luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Hugo Boss, Versace and many more.
When it was built, the mall once one of the largest in South East Asia. Its size still serve to its advantage today as it is also home to a medical center, 3 hotels and 5 anchor tenants (Jaya Jusco, Carrefour, Metrojaya, Isetan and Robinsons). There are no other malls in the country that has so many big shopping names within such close proximity.
As if the above is not enough, Mid Valley is one of the best located shopping malls in the city. It is located just 10 minutes from various neighborhoods such as Petaling Jaya, Bangsar, Old Klang Road, Cheras, and KL City Center.
2. Pavilion Shopping Mall
Pavilion made it to this list for two reasons. Location and Design. It is located between the heart of Bukit Bintang and KLCC which are ‘THE’ shopping districts in the city, and at the time of writing, it is the best shopping mall in this area. It is just a stone throw’s away from other shopping complexes and hotspots such as KLCC, Starhill Shopping Gallery, Fahrenheit, Lot 10, BB Plaza and Sungai Wang.
Other winning factor is in its designed. it is by far the best designed shopping mall in the city. Other than having a large array and good mix of shopping outlets (it houses Daiso, the RM5 store, all the way to the likes of Burberry and Prada) and eateries. The shopping mall is just a delight to be in. For starters every floor has a very high ceiling. The roof of the mall is constructed with glass panels that allows a flood of natural sunlight to light the interior of the mall. The whole mall feels very spacious and airy, every when it is crowded with shoppers to the brim.
Right outside the mall, there is a strip or bars and restaurants that is also protected by a glass ceiling, which creates a genuine alfresco feel without the threat of harsh weather elements.
3. Suria KLCC
Suria KLCC is another of my favorite shopping malls in KL. It is located right beneath the KLCC Twin Towers. The outlets here range from mid-range to luxury brands and there are also loads of other amenities such as banks, a post office, a medical center, and many others. Whether it is in terms of outlet variety, design or location, it is very hard to fault this near-perfect shopping mall.
So why is this in third place you might ask? Due to its proximity to the Twin Towers, the mall attracts lots of local and international tourists to it day and night. I have a feeling that the architects of the mall did not anticipate this volume of crowd as the mall can feel rather congested and crowded on a busy day. Not very conducive for shopping or strolling to say the least.
Honorary mention: One Utama Shopping Mall
The only reason that this shopping mall did not make it to the list is its location. It is located in Bandar Utama, which is a suburban area located 30 minutes away from the city center, not very convenient for anyone living outside that area. Other than that, it is a wonderful shopping mall.
